Driver Ed FAQ

The Driver Education Program provides students with the instruction and experiences necessary to complete applicable Utah Driver Education requirements. The program includes an online theory course through Utah Virtual Academy (UTVA), behind-the-wheel instruction, required parent education, and other applicable state requirements.

Mr. Brian Lattin serves as the Driver Education Coordinator for the overall program.

Mr. Zachary Hancock serves as the instructor for the UTVA Online Theory Course.

The Driver Education Program consists of multiple requirements, including:

1. Online Driver Education Theory Course through Utah Virtual Academy (UTVA)
2. Behind-the-Wheel Instruction
3. Required observation or other approved equivalent requirements
4. Zero Fatalities Parent Night
5. Applicable learner permit requirements
6. All other requirements established by the Utah State Board of Education (USBE), Utah Driver License Division (DLD), and applicable Utah law

Registration in the program does not guarantee successful completion of Driver Education or issuance of a Utah driver license.

Students are responsible for completing all applicable program and state requirements.

Students and their parent or legal guardian are responsible for completing the applicable Zero Fatalities Parent Night requirement.

Students and parents may attend an available in-person or approved online presentation and must follow the attendance requirements established by Zero Fatalities.

The program has several requirements:

• Students begin by registering and paying the program fee.
• Students are then enrolled in the online Driver Education Theory Course through Utah Virtual Academy using Canvas.
• Students must successfully complete the online theory course before beginning behind-the-wheel instruction.
• After successful completion of the theory course is verified, students will receive access to schedule available behind-the-wheel sessions through Driver Education Solutions (DES).
• Students must also complete Zero Fatalities Parent Night and all other applicable Utah Driver Education requirements before the program can verify final completion.
• Where do I complete the online theory course?
• The online theory course is provided through Utah Virtual Academy (UTVA) using Canvas.
• Students will receive information regarding Canvas access after registration and onboarding.
• How quickly can I complete the online theory course?
• Students should work consistently through the course and complete all required instructional activities.
• Students are strongly encouraged to complete the online theory course within three months.
• Students have a maximum of six months from enrollment to successfully complete the online theory course.

Failure to complete the online theory course within six months may result in the expiration of the student's enrollment.

An expired enrollment does not automatically qualify for a refund.

A student who wishes to continue after enrollment expires may be required to register again and pay applicable fees.

Students must complete all required modules, assignments, instructional activities, assessments, examinations, instructional time, and other course requirements.

Previous driving experience, parent-supervised driving hours, or existing knowledge does not replace required coursework.

Parents and others may support a student in understanding course material, but students must personally complete their own coursework and assessments.

Students may not have another person complete assignments or assessments for them, copy another student's work, use unauthorized assistance, falsify records, or otherwise misrepresent completion of course requirements.

Academic dishonesty may result in loss of credit, invalidation of coursework, removal from the course, or denial of completion consistent with applicable school and state requirements.

Students must meet the competency requirements established for the online Driver Education course and complete all required coursework.

Successful completion is determined by the online Driver Education instructor based on applicable course and state requirements.

Students must successfully complete the required online theory course and applicable prerequisites before beginning behind-the-wheel instruction.

No.

Registration does not guarantee completion by a particular date.

Students should complete the online theory course as early as possible and schedule behind-the-wheel instruction promptly after becoming eligible.

Students are responsible for planning around school, employment, sports, extracurricular activities, vacations, travel, graduation, permit expiration, and other personal commitments.

A student is considered complete only after all applicable program and state requirements have been successfully completed and verified.

Completing only the online theory course does not mean the student has completed Driver Education.

Completing only behind-the-wheel instruction does not mean the student has completed Driver Education.

The Driver Education Coordinator will verify applicable requirements before final program completion is processed.

No.

Participation in or successful completion of Driver Education does not guarantee issuance of a Utah driver license.

The Utah Driver License Division determines whether an individual has satisfied the requirements for a driver license.

Yes.

The Driver Education Program may reasonably modify locations, schedules, instructors, vehicles, course delivery methods, software platforms, administrative processes, or program procedures when necessary for compliance, safety, staffing, enrollment, vehicle availability, school availability, technology, or other operational needs.

Material changes affecting currently enrolled students will be communicated when appropriate.

Parents should identify accommodation needs during registration.

The registration process asks whether a student has an IEP, Section 504 Plan, dyslexia, disability, a medical consideration, a communication need, a learning need, a behavioral consideration, or another condition that may require accommodation or additional support.

Providing this information does not automatically affect the student's eligibility for Driver Education.

The program will consider reasonable accommodations consistent with applicable requirements and the individual student's needs.

The Driver Education Program may contact the parent/guardian or eligible adult student for additional information necessary to determine appropriate supports.

Because behind-the-wheel instruction involves operating a motor vehicle, safety requirements necessary for lawful and safe vehicle operation cannot be waived when doing so would violate applicable requirements or create an unsafe condition.

The information helps the program appropriately prepare for the student's participation and determine whether reasonable supports are needed.

Parents and students should provide relevant information before instruction when a disability, medical condition, communication need, behavioral need, or other circumstance could affect participation or safety.

Communications may include course information, scheduling, reminders, cancellations, program updates, payment information, completion information, and safety information.

Students and parents are responsible for keeping their contact information current and monitoring the email address and telephone number provided during registration.

Failure to read or respond to a program communication does not automatically excuse a missed deadline, scheduled drive, program requirement, or applicable fee.

Students must possess a valid Utah learner permit before participating in behind-the-wheel instruction when required by applicable Utah requirements.

Students are responsible for providing accurate permit information and bringing required documentation to their scheduled drives.

Current locations include:

Providence Hall - Herriman

Venture Academy - Ogden

Additional locations may be added as the program grows.

Locations may change based on enrollment, instructor availability, vehicle availability, participating schools, safety considerations, and other operational needs.

Students may select from available driving appointments through their Providence Hall Driver's Ed student account powered by Driver Education Solutions.

Registration does not guarantee a particular location, instructor, vehicle, date, time, or driving partner.

Availability will depend on instructors, vehicles, student enrollment, and program operations.

Behind-the-wheel scheduling is completed through the student account with Providence Hall Drivers Ed, powered by Driver Education Solutions (DES).

After successful completion of the online theory course and applicable prerequisites, students will receive information regarding scheduling.

Students and parents are responsible for selecting available appointments and keeping track of scheduled drives.

Students must follow the directions of the Driver Education instructor and operate the vehicle safely.

The instructor may stop or terminate a driving session if the student behaves unsafely, refuses to follow instructions, appears impaired, is disruptive, does not have required documentation, creates an unreasonable safety risk, or if road, weather, vehicle, or other conditions make continued instruction unsafe.

Safety takes priority over completion of a scheduled drive.

Can I participate in a drive if I am taking medication or otherwise impaired?

Students may not participate in behind-the-wheel instruction while impaired by alcohol, marijuana, illegal drugs, misused prescription medication, or another substance or condition that prevents safe operation of a motor vehicle.

Students and parents should communicate relevant safety concerns before a scheduled drive.

A scheduled drive must be canceled at least 24 hours before the scheduled start time to avoid a late cancellation fee.

Students should cancel or reschedule through Driver Education Solutions as soon as they know they cannot attend.

Yes.

A $25 fee will be charged when a student:

Fails to attend a scheduled driving appointment; or

Cancels less than 24 hours before the scheduled start time.

Students may be required to pay outstanding fees before scheduling additional behind-the-wheel sessions.

Students are expected to arrive on time and prepared.

If a student arrives substantially late and there is no longer enough time to complete the required instruction, the student may lose the scheduled session.

The session may be treated as a late cancellation or no-show, and the $25 fee may apply.

Students must bring all required documentation to behind-the-wheel instruction.

A student who does not have the required documentation or is otherwise legally unable to drive may not be permitted to participate.

The missed session may be treated as a late cancellation or no-show, and the $25 fee may apply.

The program may occasionally need to cancel, consolidate, or reschedule a driving session because of weather, unsafe road conditions, instructor availability, vehicle problems, insufficient student capacity, school closures, emergencies, or other operational or safety concerns.

Students will not be charged a cancellation fee when the program cancels a drive.

Students will be given an opportunity to select another available appointment.

Yes.

Behind-the-wheel sessions may require a minimum number of students to operate efficiently.

If a session does not meet minimum capacity, the program may cancel or consolidate the drive. Students will be notified and provided an opportunity to select another available appointment.

The total program registration fee is $225 per student.

The fee helps cover the online course, Driver Education Solutions (DES), program administration, student onboarding, behind-the-wheel instruction, instructor costs, vehicles, fuel, maintenance, scheduling, compliance, recordkeeping, and other program operating expenses.

The $225 registration fee provides enrollment in the Driver Education Program, including the online theory course and required behind-the-wheel instruction, subject to the program's Terms of Service and all applicable state requirements.

Additional fees may apply for no-shows, late cancellations, expired enrollment, or other circumstances specifically identified in the Terms of Service.

A parent/guardian or adult student may request cancellation and a partial refund within 15 calendar days of the student's original registration date.

Approved refunds will be reduced by the following non-refundable costs:

$50 onboarding and administrative fee

$6.25 Driver Education Solutions software/processing fee

Applicable credit card, debit card, merchant, or payment processing fees

Any other applicable costs for services already provided or expenses already incurred on behalf of the student

After 15 calendar days from the original registration date, the program fee is generally non-refundable except when otherwise required by law or specifically authorized by the program or sponsoring LEA.

By registering and paying for the Driver Education Program, the student and parent/guardian agree to the Driver Education Program Terms of Service and Refund Policy, including the $225 program fee; 15-day refund period; non-refundable $50 onboarding fee, $6.25 DES fee, and applicable payment processing fees; $25 no-show/late cancellation fee; 24-hour cancellation requirement; six-month online theory course deadline; behind-the-wheel scheduling requirements; accommodation procedures; and responsibility for completing all applicable Driver Education requirements.

Generally, no.

After the 15-day refund period, refunds are generally not provided because a student changes their mind, fails to complete the online course, fails to complete the program, fails to attend scheduled instruction, moves, graduates, chooses another provider, fails to maintain a valid learner permit, or cannot find a preferred driving appointment.

What happens if the program cannot provide a required service?

If the Driver Education Program becomes unable to provide a required service, it may provide an alternative date, location, instructor, transfer, credit, or an appropriate refund for the portion of services that cannot be provided.

Cancellation of an individual driving session does not constitute cancellation of the entire program and does not automatically qualify a student for a refund.

Students must appropriately use program vehicles and follow all instructor directions.

Students may not intentionally damage, misuse, abuse, or improperly operate a Driver Education vehicle.

Students and parents may be held responsible to the extent permitted by law for intentional damage or damage resulting from prohibited conduct.

The Driver Education Program operates subject to applicable Utah law, Utah State Board of Education requirements, Utah Driver License Division requirements, applicable school policies, and other controlling requirements.

If a program policy or Terms of Service provision conflicts with a controlling requirement, the controlling requirement will govern.
